Literacy Narrative Blog

My experience with writing began when I was in seventh grade.  At the time I wanted to get into reading so I asked my brother Austin what book I should read.  He told me I should read "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card.  So I went to my library at my school and I checked out "Ender's Game."  I fell in love with that book.  I thought it was so well written and the story was just so great to read.  It inspired to start writing my own material.

So I thought of some ideas and wrote down the first part of all the stories I would come up with.  If I liked the story enough or knew where I wanted it to go I would write more of it.  There aren't very many I have finished, but I got a lot of experience from writing out my ideas.  I was able to learn to use flow in my writing, and I got used to writing dialogue.

I was getting better, but my writing was still not correct grammatically or advancing in my stories.  I would get stuck easily and didn't know how to move on.  I wanted to get even better so I talked to my friends about what I should  I do.  I found out that they were all writing stories and would frequently exchange them for editing and advice.  They asked me if I wanted to be a part of it and I accepted.

Over the next two years my writing improved greatly.  My friends would give me deadlines and I would have to write a certain amount of my stories before I gave it to them.  I was able to get past being stuck all the time and continuing my stories in the right direction.  I also able to get editing as well.  I would get so many different pointers on what was wrong and how to fix it.  I feel like my writing wouldn't be as good as it is if I didn't have my friends.

I also know that my writing changed a lot my junior year of high school.  My English teacher was taught me how to correctly write several different kinds of essays I would need to know how to write.  I was also shown some grammatical things that I had always had a problem with.  My teacher had also shown me how to use databases and how to cite them when using them in a paper.  She also helped me with the flow of my papers when using a citation.  My essays have improved because of her.

I'm thankful I had my friends and my teacher to help me with my writing skills.  I know they wouldn't be as good if I didn't have them help me in the past.
